As a part of the IoT in the community project, IEEE Sarawak Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) had recently executed the IoT workshop and competition, known as “IEEE IoT 4 Community workshop and challenge”. The team consist of Ir. Ts. Dr. Then Yi Lung, Dr. Mark Tee Kit Tsun, Dr. Tay Fei Siang, Ir. Dr Chong Kok Hing and Mr Ong Chin Ann. The IoT in the community project was awarded IEEE HAC/SIGHT Grant in October 2021.
On 20th November 2021, Dr Mark Tee conducted three hours online IoT workshop to deliver the fundamental knowledge of the IoT, tinker CAD, Raspberry Pi and Arduino to the secondary school students. Students learn how to make their IoT projects in this workshop.
The secondary school students were invited to participate the IEEE IoT 4 Community Challenge held on 26 November 2021. The competition aimed to aspire participants to contribute ideas for the innovations in IoT applications. Various secondary school participants competing via online platform by uploading a recorded video to explain and demonstrate their innovative idea on IoT.
The participants were judged based on problem significance, novelty, practicality, degree of IoT involved and details of the prototype. As a part of the judging team and SIGHT Vice Chair, Dr Tay said the main purpose of this competition is to inspire the school students to learn fundamental of IoT and apply their knowledge to build the innovative IoT applications. He added that participants were doing well and able to produce innovative IoT applications to adopt IoT to their daily life.
The winners were announced on 3rd December 2021. The prize giving ceremony was held on 11th December 2021 and attended by Dr Hudy Sisowoyo, Dr Mark Tee and Dr Tay Fei Siang.
