As a part of the IoT in the community project, IEEE Sarawak Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) had recently executed the IoT workshop and competition, known as “IEEE IoT 4 Community workshop and challenge”. The IoT in the community project was awarded IEEE HAC/SIGHT Grant in October 2021.

On last 20th November 2021, three hours online IoT workshop was delivered. Students learn how to make their IoT projects in this workshop. While on 26 February, Dr. Mark Tee and Mr. Ong Chin Ann conducted the 2nd workshop as a continuous effort to train the students on IoT coding and programming. In the 2nd workshop, students are able to programme the planting kit they have received and learn during the workshop.

In the final stage (April 2022), students will get involved with our trainers for planting and prototyping. We have shortlisted 10 students in this stage. The students were judged based on problem significance, novelty, practicality, degree of IoT involved and details of the prototype. Dr Then Yi Lung, the Sarawak SIGHT chair has commented that all 36 students are very active and gave a lot of cooperation during workshop. He is looking forward to the final completion of the projects by the 10 shortlisted candidates.

The shortlisted students to final round (Farming integration) are Jazlyn Jong Yian Xze (MRSM Kuching), Joey Jong Yian Tzng (SMJK Kuching High), Aidan Tan (Lodge International School), Hii Wei Bao (SMK Jalan Arang), Felix Thian Zhi Xiang (SMK Jalan Arang), Melcom Chan (SMK DPHA Gapor), Nathan Low (St Joseph Private), Darren Huang Huat Yao (SMK DPHA Gapor), Esther Ng (SMJK Kuching High), and Albee Ngu Chen Ying (SMK Bandar Sarikei).
