The IEEE Sarawak Subsection and IEEE Swinburne Sarawak Student Branch proudly announce its newest engineering project under the IEEE Engineering Projects in Community Service, EPICS funding scheme. Traditional walkers are still dominant today due to the aversion of elderly users toward less intuitive, useful, or convenient technologies. Although sensor-based smart walkers available on the market help resolve mobility issues, there remains a lack of focus on the functionality to return a walker to its user automatically when misplaced.

The project, titled ‘Self-Navigating Robotic Walking Aid for Elderly People Using Multi-Sensor Fusion-Based Human Tracking,’ seeks to improve on existing walkers targeted at the elderly. The objective is to develop a prototype for a home-friendly, affordable solution to address this problem and aid the elderly. This project is funded by IEEE. Its goal is to solve community challenges through the power of education and technology while giving students a platform to work with engineering professionals to develop solutions that transform communities worldwide.

The team comprises staff and students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science. The team has a well-balanced talents of IEEE senior members Lau Bee Theng and Mark Tee Kit Tsun, as well as IEEE graduate members Albe Chai Bing Zhe, Isaac Asante, and Atiqul Islam.
