Title: A Tour of Artificial Neural Network: from Perceptron to Deep Learning
Speaker: Dr Loke Kar Seng
We will examine the historical basis of modern day neural network from its beginning in the 50s to current deep learning networks. Deep learning has been instrumental in the current revival for Artificial Intelligence that has advanced the art by leaps and bounds. They are to be found in many products such as image search, speech recognition and game playing (such as AlphaGo). This talk will introduce the basic and essential concepts of neural networks. We will discuss the neural network learning from first principles by examining the concepts of cost minimization, gradient descent and backpropagation. We will also touch on the workings of the convolutional neural network and its relationship to human visual system.
